Modern Japanese consists of three systems: Hiragana and Katakana (two Japanese alphabets) and Kanji a writing system adapted from Chinese characters. Hiragana is a phonetic alphabet and the most basic part of the Japanese alphabet. Hiragana is used for “native” words like conjunctions, particles, and furigana (kanji pronunciation). Katakana is used for foreign “loan” words, sound effects, and for emphasis.
