At the end of the day $50 isn’t a lot of money but that little wager would end up having an enormous impact.
Bennett Cerf, was the founder of the publishing firm, Random House and Geisel’s editor. You might know Theo Geisel by another name, Dr. Seuss. Cerf bet Dr. Seuss that he would not be able to write a quality children’s book using only 50 different words. For comparison, Seuss had used 225 words for his recently published The Cat in the Hat.
Green Eggs and Ham was the result of that bet and in its time it has sold more than 200 million copies. One of the most popular children’s books of all time was all because of a friendly bet between these two men…don’t tell the kids
